Handheld Video Games: A Media Literacy Project ~ LIS 405 ~ by Taylor and Dez
Investigating what the media says to the intended audience about images and stories: • Implied values and attitudes transmitted by the media • Accessibility – understanding it as well as being able to obtain/access it • Gender of the intended audience – is it directed mainly to young females, males, no specific gender? • Is this a “respected” media or something that offers a chance to “defy” authority? The content we are looking for will focus on children, not parents and teachers.

Respectful or Not?
Are handheld video games "condoned" by parents or teachers or is it something that offers a chance for children to "disobey" authority?
Intended Audience
Who is the intended audience of handheld video games? Why? Is it directed to young females versus young males? Is it gender specific at all? What do you think?
Accessibility
What does the media imply about a child's ability to access and obtain video games through handheld devices?
Implied Values and Attitudes
What does the media have to say about the values and attitudes of children that come about from handheld video games such as (in my time the Gameboy) or more recently the Nintendo DS, iPod or iPads?
A Media Literacy Project LIS 405
In this project, we are to investigate the topic of Handheld Video Games to
ascertain what the media is saying to the intended audience about images and
stories. We are to look carefully at:
•
Implied values and attitudes
transmitted by the media
•
Accessibility – understanding it
as well as being able to obtain/access it
•
Gender of the intended audience –
is it directed mainly to young females, males, no specific gender?
•
Is this a “respected” media or
something that offers a chance to “defy” authority?
The content we are looking for will focus on children, not parents and teachers. (de Vos, G., 2013)
